Essential Detailing Seminar

By Don Kleist

Members who were getting their Porsches out of hibernation and ready for the
warm weather driving season, and others who just wanted to learn how best to
keep their Porsches shiny and bright assembled at Munk’s Motors on Saturday,
April 16 to learn from the pros. Members Fred Young, Bill Blacklock, Bob
Amano, and Bruce Gearns shared their award-winning techniques for producing
concours-wining cars. And host Chris Braden offered his expertise gained
through many years of working on cars.

Each person has his own personal way of preparing a car. But one look at their
cars and you have to agree that there is no single way to detail a car. But we all
learned some of the tricks of the trade. For example, how many of you remove
your belt before washing your car? You certainly do not want new scratches on
that pretty paint! Or how many use a leaf blower to get most of the water off of
your car before you completely dry it? Believe me, it works. No more water
dripping from bits of molding or rear view mirrors.

The morning session consisted of each of the instructors describing his
approach to detailing. After a lunch of pizza and pop, the attendees were given
hands-on demonstrations of how to wash a car properly, and how to detail
paint, interiors, wheels and tires, suspensions, and engine compartments.

In the end, there was way more information than I could absorb. But now, at
least, I have an idea of what needs to be done and how to start. And, more
importantly, I have guys to turn to when I have questions.

For this article, we have a treat. A couple of weeks after the Essential Detailing
Seminar I received an email from member John Theofanopoulos of Mis Tek
Enterprises, LLC, a video production company. This email had a link to a video
he made documenting the seminar. He gave me permission to post this video
on our web site.

John told me that the video is in MPEG4 format and requires Apple’s QuickTime
application to view it. If you do not have this application, you can download it
for free at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/mac.html for the
Macintosh version or http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html for
the Windows version.

A right click (Control-click for Macintosh users) should let you download the
video to your hard drive.

Modem users beware, the video clip is 32.5 MB!
